Vacancy - Trainee Patent Attorney

21 October 2024, Catherine Crowe

We are always on the look out for trainee patent attorneys to join our team.  Please send a cover letter along with your CV to Caroline Marshall, Practice Manager.

The Role:

Patent attorneys advise clients on how to protect new inventions, including innovative products and processes. As a patent attorney you will meet with inventors and business owners to discuss new inventions and advise on the best way to protect them. You will write patent applications describing the invention and correspond with examiners at the Patent Office to obtain your client a granted patent. You may also be involved with disputes concerning patents, including defending your client’s patent if it is opposed, or advising your client if a third party is considered to be infringing your client’s legal rights.

A patent attorney must have a good understanding of the inventions, and must be able to describe these clearly. Accordingly, a patent attorney must have excellent analytical skills, excellent written communication skills, and be able to think clearly with logic and reasoning.

A patent attorney must not only have a good background in science or engineering, but must also be able to apply legal knowledge to a situation, and advise a client with commercial understanding.

As a patent attorney you also liaise with other patent attorneys all over the world. You have the opportunity to travel to meet fellow professionals at international conferences and to strengthen relationships with firms of patent attorneys in many different countries.

A career as a patent attorney offers an interesting blend of scientific knowledge, legal knowledge, written communication, and an understanding of business and the commercial impact of advice.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Good degree (2:1 or above) in a science or engineering discipline
  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem solving skills
  • Ideally some additional experience such as PhD, post doctoral research or other appropriate work experience
